How to grow Microgreens

To grow microgreens at home, you'll need seeds, a growing medium like soil or a seed mat, a container, water, and light. Start by soaking seeds if necessary, then sow them on the medium, keeping them moist and warm until they germinate. Once sprouted, provide light and continue watering until ready to harvest.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

1. Choose Your Seeds and Container:
  • Select a variety of microgreen seeds that appeal to you. Popular choices include broccoli, radish, kale, and mustard.
  • Pick a container with drainage holes, like a shallow tray or a repurposed container. Make sure it's wide enough to give your microgreens space.
2. Prepare the Growing Medium:
  • Fill your container with a seed-starting mix or potting soil.
  • Moisten the soil with a spray bottle or gentle watering can.
3. Sow the Seeds:
  • Scatter the seeds evenly over the soil surface.
  • For smaller seeds, you can lightly cover them with a thin layer of soil. For larger seeds, you may need to bury them slightly deeper.
  • Gently press the seeds into the soil.
4. Germination:
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
  • You can cover the container with a lid or plastic wrap to maintain humidity during germination.
  • Place the container in a warm, dark place.
  • Germination times vary by seed, but most microgreens sprout within a few days.
5. Light and Watering:
  • Once the seeds have sprouted, remove the cover and place the container in a sunny spot or under grow lights.
  • Microgreens need bright light for at least 12 hours a day.
  • Continue to water regularly, keeping the soil moist.
6. Harvest:
  • Microgreens are typically ready to harvest in 7-21 days, depending on the variety.
  • Harvest when the first true leaves appear by cutting the seedlings at the soil line.
Tips for Success:
  • Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix designed for starting seeds.
  • Watering: Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to mold or damping-off.
  • Light: Ensure adequate light for healthy growth, either natural or artificial.
  • Air Circulation: Good air circulation can help prevent mold and mildew
